About Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting fine needles into specific points around the body for preventative or therapeutic purposes, to encourage healing and pain relief.

Medical acupuncture is typically performed after an assessment of medical history, general health, physical examination and diagnosis. It can be used to treat a wide range of health conditions, with the most common reason being pain relief.

Chosen points on the body will be used to place the needles based on your condition. Multiple points may be used, depending on your symptoms. The fine, single-use pre-sterilised needles are inserted just under the skin, or in some cases slightly deeper in order to reach the muscle tissue. Once the needles are in place, they may be left in position for between 10-30 minutes.

Medical acupuncture is a form of treatment which is increasingly being practised, to help manage pain and inflammation. Whilst acupuncture can be performed as an individual treatment, it can also be used in conjunction with other complementary therapies such as Osteopathy.

Acupuncture can help to relieve pain by stimulating the brain and nervous system to produce pain-relieving chemicals. This is thought to help promote the body’s natural healing process, which can be essential in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides guidelines for the NHS on the use of treatments and care of patients.

Currently, NICE  recommends considering acupuncture as a treatment option for:

Acupuncture is also used to treat other musculoskeletal conditions (of the bones and muscles) and pain conditions, including:

  • chronic pain, such as neck pain
  • joint pain
  • dental pain
  • postoperative pain

I will assess your case and treatment will be tailored to your individual symptoms. For this reason, each treatment may vary with regards to how many needles are used, and where they are placed on the body.
